Time is winding down on the school year and each month the staff at Umatilla High School has gone through a voting process to highlight top students and honor them as student of the month.

There are plenty of reasons to win the award. Many students are capable of getting their grades up and becoming Student of the Month. One of those students happens to be senior Ms. Esteisy Leon, who got student of the month in February of 2017.

“I was surprised,” said Ms. Leon. “I feel like I did deserve it because not only am I on top of my grades but I love helping people to the best of my abilities.”

Umatilla High School science teacher Mary Buckallew believes that Ms. Leon earned the honor. “She is responsible and shows integrity. I could count on her for anything I need to do,” Mrs. Buckallew said.

After finishing up at Umatilla High Esteisy plans on to continue school in Pendleton. “I’m attending Blue Mountain Community College in order to get my degree as a Neonatal Nurse,” Ms. Leon said.
