On Jan. 23 the Umatilla basketball program had home games against Burns High School. In “The Pit”, the first 50 students to sit in the Viking Cheer section got a free tee-shirt for rooting for the home team.
While the Pep Band was warming up, the Umatilla broadcasting crew was setting up their software to livestream the event. (Umatilla High School’s broadcasting class is broadcasting home basketball games on www.nfhsnetwork.com.)
First up, the girls varsity team lost 39-36. Umatilla had a one-point lead before Burns senior Lindsey Taylor hit a 3-pointer to regain the lead. Another slow starting game with the Vikings just scoring an Aleesha Watson basket in the first quarter. Umatilla was led by Ms. Watson with a total of 18 points and 14 rebounds, Sophomore Lauryn Journot added 10 points with 4 assists.
The boys varsity team won 66-37. Throughout the game it was constant defense, with The Vikings up 49-33 in the third, Umatilla held Burns to only 4 points in the final 8 minutes. Junior point guard Kaden Webb led the Vikings to victory with an 18-point total for the game. Burns senior Scott Davies was their highest scorer with 11 points for the game.
