The Umatilla boys soccer team got the big win against Irrigon on Oct 25 to earn a playoff spot

The boys really showed their aggressiveness and dedication on the field on Oct 25 beating Irrigon on senior night to earn a spot in the playoffs. The score was 5-0 with the Vikings in the lead in the first half. With the lead in hand, in the second half Coach Pedro Ortiz told the boys to settle down and just focus on ball control.
The Knights pulled two goals back late but the Vikings held on for the 5-2 win. With those two goals in mind the boys really focused and finished the game with a score of 5-2 taking them to state.
“Before the game i was kinda nervous, but after that first goal I knew the game was going to end in our favor,” said team captain Luis Vallejo. “The boys really showed what they were capable of, giving it their best and never giving up.”
The goals were scored by Diego Saldana, Luis Castro, Cesar DeLaCruz, and Ben Binene earned a brace with two goals.
“Diego [Saldana] has been improving and working hard throughout the season but he took us by surprise when he took on each and every defender and scored a goal through the goalies lower corner,” Vallejo said. . “He really did show us what he was capable of that night.”
The Umatilla boys traveled to Portland Adventist Academy on Nov. 3 for the first round of the OSAA/US Bank/Les Schwab Tires 1A/2A/3A but lost to the defending state champions 5-1 to have their season come to an end.
